Ethiopia 2050

Intersection of Demographic Changes & Societal Grand Challenges

By 2050, the country’s urban population alone is projected to reach 70.5 million with an urbanization rate of ~37%

Who Are We

  • We are a group of volunteer Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia, with diverse background, that have come together to make a difference.
  • We recognize that this is an opportune time for Ethiopians to leverage the demographic dividend, advancement in technology, big date, and new thinking to convert current challenges into opportunities and, thereby, transform their lives and their country.
  • We fully access the conclusions and recommendations of the Ethiopia 2050 Blue Ribbon Panel Report, and commit to contributing to successful implementation of these recommendation.
  • Determined to do our part, we have launched various initiatives, including the digital Hubs and STEM Labs, and continue to explore additional ones.
  • We seek to work together with like minded entities, develop collaborations and partnerships to advance our goals.

About

We are a group of like-minded Ethiopian engineers, architects, and planners who are concerned that as Ethiopia’s population continues to grow dramatically and is projected to reach 190-200 million by 2050, the scale of challenges that await the country in terms of basic and critical infrastructures in energy, water, food, housing, transportation, renewable resources, etc., are staggering.

Driven by this concern, we formed a task force that will organize an international conference where thoughtful, practical, and bold solutions  to address these societal challenges will be presented. With the critical support of the country’s leading professional organizations, an international steering committee was then formed to: (a) lead this effort towards completion through an international technical conference and (b) select Blue Ribbon Panel to write a comprehensive report. This forthcoming report which will be a product of the international conference on the subject is intended to serve as a starting point for national conversation among policy-makers, political and economic leaders, professionals and various stake-holder towards formulation of concrete and actionable sets of policies that could turn these challenges into opportunities.

Specifically, through sets of grand visions and a series of peer-reviewed research reports and white papers by subject matter experts in a variety of engineering, technology, and planning disciplines, the report will offer bold, feasible, and actionable grand ideas for addressing the top 10 grand challenges of the country. Blue Ribbon Panel of independent professionals will author this “Ethiopia 2050” final report, the successful outcome of which will be measured through its impact in (a) influencing policy making in the years to come and (b) encouraging the subsequent launch of entrepreneurial, public, and government activities around the proposed solutions.

What is the "ETHIOPIA 2050" Initiative

Ethiopia is in the midst of a remarkable and unprecedented demographic transformation. By 2050, its population is projected to reach 210 million people. This powerful demographic transition will also be accompanied by several other transformative natural forces. These forces include pressure from ongoing societal, economical, geo-political, and environmental changes and disruptions. Arguably, the next set of potential conflicts in our region could be driven by the competition for valuable resources such as water and arable land that will be further exacerbated by pressure from population increase and adverse effects of climate change. Taken together, the next several years leading to 2050 will reshape Ethiopia’s identity. Therefore, we must face the full impact of these emerging forces head-on. To proactively address what were identified as “Ten Grand Challenges and Opportunities” associated with this expected generational and historical demographic shift, this ETHIOPIA2050 Initiative was launched to carefully examine, both the opportunities of demographic dividend and the associated risks.

How it Started

In December 2019, the ETHIOPIA 2050 International Steering-Committee (ET2050 ISC) hosted an international conference in Addis Ababa entitled “ETHIOPIA 2050 – GRAND CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES” in association with Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS), Ethiopian Economic Association (EEA), Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers (EACE), Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA), Ethiopian Society of Mechanical Engineers (ESME), Ethiopian Society of Chemical Engineers (ESChE), Ethiopian Society of Electrical Engineers (ESEE), and Ethiopian Urban Planners Association (EUPA). The conference was attended by more than 400 attendants. The first major outcome of that conference was the “Blue Ribbon Panel Report“. The general theme of the conference and the BRP Report is the challenges and opportunities related to these threats under the following 10 Grand Challenges identified by the Steering Committee.

  • Access to Clean Water and Equitable Water Distribution
  • Large-Scale Urbanization
  • Food Security
  • Sustainability and Environmental Issues
  • Meeting Energy Demand
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Transportation Infrastructure
  • ICT Infrastructure Expansion
  • Access to Health Care
  • STEM Education, Workforce Development & Employment
